Three beautiful options
Sometimes inspiration comes from the opposite direction. The concept for Burnish came into being on a cold and rainy day, with an insistent wind and a sky that hung deep grey. But as Jade and I went over colour possibilities, what we kept coming back to were the warmest textures of the season: the crunch of autumn leaves, the craggy brown bark of the trees, the crackle of flames, warm winter spices, and the burnished patina of bright coper kettles. It was the last one that really caught our imaginations, the way warm metals will bloom with unlikely combinations of greens, yellows, browns, and sometimes even purples.
We began exploring it by mixing up warm, spicey hues. As you know, we dye entirely from primary colours and so we had to be very careful because just the slightest change to the mixture had a big effect. We submerged the skeins in the first dyebath and, after they’d soaked in the colour, poured over the second wash and then the third, allowing them to layer over one another.
And then, once the dyepots began to really heat up, we added just a soft streak of green – no more than hint, so as to keep the colourway semi-solid.
But for the two coordinating colourways, we aimed for a much bolder texture. Tarnish is a more graphic variegated based on those same coppery hues but with a much starker patina of deep greens and bright streak of purple. And for Polish, we changed everything: softening all the hues and submerging the yarn into the green first, before layering the warmer hues over top. Use them for their own project or combined with the original colourway.

When the nights really began to draw in a few weeks ago, I found myself lighting a small candle on the table next to my chair as I knit. I don’t know why, but having that candle keeping me company makes my knitting time feel more luxurious, more like “me time”. So I thought you might like to have a candle of your own too! With the delicious scent of holiday cookies and, of course, our happy SpaceCadet whizzing by in his flying saucer, I hope it will make your time with your new yarn even more special!
At SpaceCadet®, we passionately believe that knitting and crocheting make people happier deep down inside and that nothing does that more than working with gorgeous, vibrant yarn.
