The Colourways:

Three beautiful options

Once the weather warms up, it feels natural to move our team meetings outside (why? because we can!) instead of staying cooped up indoors. There’s something about the breeze, the sunlight, and the sound of birdsong that gets all the creative juices flowing afresh.

And so it was at a recent meeting as we planned the latest Yarn Alliance colourway. In fact, it was more than warm – it was hot – and the flowering bushes along the edge of the woods had burst into bloom. And even though we might have reacted to the heat by thinking of escaping to cooler hues, we found ourselves instead drawing inspiration the deliciously intense colours of those flowers: hot pinks, deep magentas, and warm gingers.

We started by setting up four different dyebaths, all mixed by hand from the primaries.  The first was pure magenta that we deepened with a touch of black. The second was bright, sun-kissed gold. The third was the beautiful waxy green of the bushes’ leaves. And the fourth was a clear, rose red. Then we took the skeins and passed them through each of the dyebaths, twisting them this way and that as they soaked up the dye, and watching with delight as the colours blended into one another and created whole new shades as they did. The result is a beautiful, painterly colourway that will be a riot of hot summer colours that change with every stitch!

For the coordinating colourways, we used those same dyebaths but employed completely different techniques for entirely new results. For our graphically variegated colourway, we kept the dyes in distinct regions on the skein to create bright pops of clear colour between areas of soft blends. And for our semi-solid, we concentrated on just two of the dyebaths – the deep magenta and the warm ginger – and let the two colours flow over one another… with a soft wash of the green to create a tiny shadow for added depth.


The Yarn:

Ester is smooth and sturdy, the perfect hard-working yarn.

Fiber Content: 80% Superwash Merino, 20% Nylon; 3-ply
Weight: Fingering;  Each skein is approximately 3.5oz/100g, and the yarn contains approximately 365 yards per 100g

  • Order as many skeins as you like, and we will get them in the dyepots for you! Because this is a custom process, please allow up to 4-6 weeks for your order to be ready.

  • A very important note: As you know, different dyelots rarely match perfectly, especially in hand-dyed yarns. Although we will do everything in our power to replicate the yarns from first dyelot, the yarn you receive may not match perfectly. Do bear this in mind if an exact match is important to you. To minimise any visible impact when using hand-dyed yarns, we always recommend alternating skeins every couple of rows in your project.
