Three beautiful options
As the year moves on, my evening walk takes on a whole new appearance: the nights are drawing in and when setting out at a time that felt like late afternoon just a few months ago now feels decidedly evening-ish. The sky is darker, its soft blues now turning murky and giving way to encroaching purples that will soon descend into black. And the branches of trees along the pathway lose their detail and into a single, deep shade of warm maroon-brown. My walk is not the same as it was before – it’s somehow both more still and yet more intriguing – and it brings with it the familiar promise of a most welcome new season.
To create Descent, a colourway that captures the feel of an autumn walk, we first began with a soft blue – a sky blue that might have been perfectly appropriate only a few months before – and added into the dyebath just a few drops of a complementary hue to give a sense the moodiness of a later evening sky. Then we layered on a rich purple, which we kept strong and clear to create an interesting contrast.
As these two hues began to set in the rising temperature of the dyebath, we poured in first a wash of the inky black of the coming night sky. And, finally, we added a strong pour of bright orange that, as it swirled into the blues and purples, deeped into a deliciously warm and rich maroon-brown.
The result is an intriguingly beautiful colourway, its painterly moving swiftly along your stitches to create a fascinating and ever-changing fabric. Cast on now and you’ll see what I mean
And we took these same hues to produce two coordinating colourways. In Encroach, the blues and purples are much more deeply blended, to produce a dark (semi-)semi-solid that is lifted with warm touches of the maroon-brown. And in Lucent, each of colours are separated out to show off each hue clearly, even with some of the natural skein showing through, creating a beautifully graphic colourway that is bright and exciting.
Use them for a larger project, to work as a gentle contrast, as very subtle stripes, or in softly changing colour blocks.
