Winter days can be grey and dreary, and winter nights long and so dark. And as everything seems to lose its luster – trees leafless, flowers gone, skies shrouded in cloud – we find ourselves longing not just for colour, but to dive into the deepest, richest, most saturated hues. So it’s the brightest winter berries that catch our eye, the jovial flash of plumage as a bird takes flight, and, of course, the most saturated skeins of yarn to warm us as our fingers work each vibrant stitch.

For this beautiful colourway, we wanted to create something both simple and deeply compelling: a crimson red so rich and bold that wrapping yourself up in the finished object would feel nothing short of decadent. So we began by mixing up three different reds: one an incredible, bright berry red; one a darkened magenta; and the last a softly bruised wine.

Then we began submerging the skeins in each, layering the hues one over another. In some places, they stayed true to the original shade and, in others, they flowed over one and blended. And finally, we poured over a cloud of soft grey, to create depth of shade. The result is a stunning semi-solid of reds that range from crimsons to berries to magenta-plums, and which will change and morph intriguingly as each stitch moves through your fingers.

For the coordinating colourways, we dyed a graphically variegated and a painterly skein. Heartening has concentrated berry red at one end of the skein and then we dyed the other end with the soft grey, leaving them crisp with a line of the natural wool in between. And then for fun, we added a few splashes of extra colour here and there that will turn into delightful pops in your finished object.

And for Gladdening, we twisted the skeins as they went into the dyebath, adding colour in layers to blend them in ways that will create an almost watercolour effect in your final project.

The Yarn:

Oriana is an sock twist fingering yarn with 8 plies that give extra strength and durability.

Fiber Content: 90% Superwash Merino, 10% Nylon; 8-ply
Weight: Fingering; Each skein is approximately 3.5oz/100g, and the yarn contains approximately 420 yards per 100g

A very important note: As you all know, different dyelots rarely match perfectly, especially in hand-dyed yarns. Although we will do everything in our power to replicate the yarns from first dyelot, the yarn you receive may not match perfectly. Do bear this in mind if an exact match is important to you. To minimise any visible impact when using hand-dyed yarns, we always recommend alternating skeins every couple of rows in your project.
