The Colourways

Three beautiful options

  • Sail Away (the painterly colourway in your parcel)
  • Plunge (a coordinating graphically variegated colourway)
  • Submerge (a coordinating semi-solid colourway)

For our last ever(!) SpaceMonster Mega Yarn Club parcel, we agreed we wanted to create a truly compelling colourway, something that felt fresh, juicy,  and undeniably summer-y. And whether you live on the coast, near a lake or, like us, in a landlocked location that is blessed with beautiful rivers (Pittsburgh has three!), nothing fits that bill so well as the inspiration that water brings.

So to capture the beauty of cool waters on a hot summer’s day, we began by mixing not one, not two, but three different blues. The first was a soft baby blue, like the sky, like the shallowest of pools. The second was a vibrant turquoise, and the third was a deep periwinkle which we then darkened and made moody with a gentle wash of grey. And finally, we mixed a delightfully fresh lime green that created a bright pop but also darkened when it eventually mixed with the blues.

We carefully twisted our skeins and submerged them into the dyebaths one by one, letting them soak up the colour -- just enough but not too much -- and then lifting them out and retwisting each skein before moving it onto the next dyebath.  This process allowed the colour to swirl around the yarn and strike each skein in a completely unique way, creating a painterly colourway that will be a delight to work with, the colours changing subtly as you move from stitch to stitch.

Coordinating Colourways!

For the graphicly variegated colourway, we used the same blues and green, but folded each skein before introducing it to the dyebath, to enable the colour to strike in distinct sections. And for the semi-solid, we focused on the deepest and richest of the dye colours.

Use them for a larger project, to work as a gentle contrast, as very subtle stripes, or in softly changing colour blocks.

Your Gift...

Because this is the very last SpaceMonster parcel ever, I went with the gift option that has proven the most popular over the years: members always tell me how much they love (and need!) new  project bags. And the bag in your parcel is extra special, designed with extra pockets and a D-ring to make it easy to carry your phone, tablet, and extra notions along with your yarn. And all with our happy SpaceMonster to keep you company as you knit or crochet!

A $24 value, these delightful project bags are specially priced for SpaceMonster Club members at only $17.99

  • An important note about skein matchingAs you know, different dyelots rarely match perfectly, especially in hand-dyed yarns, and even more especially in a variegated colourway like this one. Although we will do everything in our power to replicate the yarns from first dyelot, the yarn you receive may not match perfectly. Do bear this in mind if an exact match is important to you. To minimise any visible impact when using hand-dyed yarns, we always recommend alternating skeins every couple of rows in your project.
