The Colourways:

Three beautiful options

  • Dancing Lights (the graphically variegated colourway in your parcel)
  • Magnetosphere (a painterly coordinating colourway)
  • Skywatcher (a semi-solid coordinating colourway)

I’ve always wanted to see the Aurora Borealis but I’ve never been so lucky (and if you have, I’m jealous!). Still, what we haven’t yet been able to experience, we can imagine.

So one bright spring afternoon, my assistant Jade and I sat down and concocted the Northern Lights in our minds.  We both saw glowing greens and teals swirling across an inky-dark sky filled with a thousand sparkling, pin-prick stars. We talked through all the details of what we thought might be there: the colour of the lights on the earth below – on snow or rocks or maybe reflected by the sea -- and might there be some wispy clouds passing through and getting caught up in the display?

And once we had mapped out all that in our minds, it was time to recreate in the dyebaths! The best bit? All three of these colourways have been dyed on a yarn worth of their gorgeousness: Callisto, our amazingly luxurious silk-linen-alpaca blend.

We knew we wanted our main colourway, Dancing Lights, to be graphically variegated, and began by mixing up a deliciously intense and yet still soft lime green.  Then we created a beautifully bright and clear teal blue.

We layered them onto the skein, letting each hue start at one end and then merge into the other at the middle – and watched as they blended to form a third colour, a deep green, where they met.  And finally, added some streaks of deep ink along each skein’s length, to add depth and complexity to the whole colourway.

For the semi-solid, Skywatcher, we decided to play up that lovely third-colour green by blending the two original colours very evenly along the whole skein, and then finishing with a soft wash of the inky night sky.  And for our painterly colourway, Magnetosphere, we created layers and layers of colour: starting with the same greens and teals, but now bringing depth to their colours by submerging them in glaze of midnight black, all set against pops of the softest silvery-grey to create bright spots – like the stars – in the fabric it creates.

The Yarn:

Callisto is one of our most luxurious yarns.  As soon as you hold it, you’ll see the incredible drape from the linen and silk, and that utterly delicious halo that the alpaca gives!

Fiber Content: 50% Baby Alpaca, 25% Silk, 25% Linen; 3-ply
Weight: Fingering; Each skein is approximately 3.5oz/100g, and the yarn contains approximately 435 yards per 100g

Bonus! Extra Buttons!

As Jade and I imagined the Aurora Borealis that spring afternoon, we naturally saw the SpaceCadet zooming through the sky as well! So I asked Maria at A Needle Runs Through It to create these fun (and bold!) statement buttons, so that you can add his flying saucer to your Northern Lights inspired project too.

Flying Saucer Buttons: Normally priced at $10, these these custom buttons are available to Yarn Alliance members at $6.99

Although we will do everything in our power to replicate the yarns from first dyelot, the yarn you receive may not match perfectly. Do bear this in mind if an exact match is important to you. To minimise any visible impact when using hand-dyed yarns, we always recommend alternating skeins every couple of rows in your project.

At SpaceCadet®, we passionately believe that knitting and crocheting make people happier deep down inside and that nothing does that more than working with gorgeous, vibrant yarn. For us, dyeing is a cosmic adventure -- a wonderful process of mixing each shade by hand from primaries and seeing where the colour takes us. The result is yarn that is as exciting for you as it is for us. Come with us and explore the farthest reaches of SpaceCadet® colour!
