The Colourway:

Three beautiful options

      • Cézanne (the graphically variegated colourway in your parcel)
      • Céz-off (a semi-solid coordinating colourway)
      • So Van Gogh (a painterly coordinating colourway)
The story behind this colourway starts three different ways. The first is that my assistant Jade and I were talking about the way painters will often begin their paintings with an underlying wash of colour and discussing the similarities to some of our dyeing techniques.

The second is that, in that conversation, we looked at one of Cézanne’s Mont Saint-Victoire paintings (below) and both immediately knew we wanted to dye something based on its colours. The way the blue mountain and sky plays against the yellow underlay is fascinating to us as dyers.

And the third was the fact that we both found it utterly hilarious -- and downright irresistible -- to call one colourway Cézanne… and the other Céz-off. …Anyone who grew up watching ‘80s films (cough… The Karate Kid… cough) will know exactly why

To create this colourway, we started just like Cézanne with a lovely golden underlay, which we washed across most of the length of the skein. Then to give the ruddy earthtones in the painting, we took that same hue, warmed it up even more, and applied it to one end of the skein. The colours of the sky and mountain are a deep slate that we layered over the other end of the yarn, watching as it also created leafy greens where-ever it blended into the golden underlay.  And finally, we applied crisp lines of deep black across each skein, to really capture the feel of Cézanne’s brushwork.

The result is a graphically variegated colourway in hues that, at first glance, perhaps seem too disparate to work together… but that, brought together by that beautiful underlay, will work up in your project with all the beauty of Cézanne’s genius.

Bonus: Two Coordinating Colourways!

The semi-solid coordinating colourway, Céz-off, puts the focus on the play between that golden underlay and the deep, ruddy earthtones by removing (taking off… see what we did there?) the blue and black elements – and the result is absolutely beautiful. And the painterly colourway, So Van Gogh, pulls in the golds, rusts, greens, and black, but this time layered one over another in short, interweaving brushstrokes..

Use them to work as an accent, as stripes, or in colour blocks.

  • An important note about skein matching:  As you know, different dyelots rarely match perfectly, especially in hand-dyed yarns, and even more especially in a variegated colourway like this one. Although we will do everything in our power to replicate the yarns from first dyelot, the yarn you receive may not match perfectly. Do bear this in mind if an exact match is important to you. To minimise any visible impact when using hand-dyed yarns, we always recommend alternating skeins every couple of rows in your project.

At SpaceCadet®, we passionately believe that knitting and crocheting make people happier deep down inside and that nothing does that more than working with gorgeous, vibrant yarn.  For us, dyeing is a cosmic adventure -- a wonderful process of mixing each shade by hand from primaries and seeing where the colour takes us.  The result is yarn that is as exciting for you as it is for us.  Come with us and explore the farthest reaches of SpaceCadet® colour!
