Three beautiful options
On the afternoon that my assistant Jade and I were planning this colourway, the sky was cloudy. We were sitting outside on the first day that was warmish enough to feel comfortable and enjoying that sense of hopefulness that the earliest days of Spring always inspire. There were a few ragtag crocus buds pushing through the dirt near our feet – I am no gardener, so they never get the love they deserve, but they return each year nonetheless.
And as we both sat there, Jade looking up at the sky and me looking over at the crocuses, she said, “How about greys?” just as I said, “Why don’t we do purples?” And suddenly, that combination seemed exactly right, the perfect embodiment of that cloudy, still slightly cold, and yet definitely Spring afternoon.
To start, we mixed up a rich charcoal grey in the dyepot. We layered it onto each skein and then lifted them so it ran down the yarn, becoming lighter as it did so. Then we created a very deep royal purple – those lovely persistent crocuses – and applied that neatly to one end of each skein, letting it blend into the different shades of grey already on the skein. And finally we created a slightly darkened and dirty magenta – just for a little spring-inspired contrast – and layered that at the opposite end.
The result is a beautifully variegated yarn, with graphic changes in colour that will both flow in your stitches and create clean pops of colour.
And we took these same hues to produce two coordinating colourways but applied the dye in completely different ways. Awakening is our painterly colourway, where we’ve applied the dye skein-by-skein, twisting and turning each one through the different dyebaths to encourage the colours to flow over one another. It will create a beautifully mottled fabric. And Arrival is our semi-solid, in deep shades of purple and pinks that we dyed first and then glazed with a bath of that lovely charcoal grey, to create beautiful depth of shade.
Use them for a larger project, to work as a gentle contrast, as very subtle stripes, or in softly changing colour blocks.
