Three beautiful options
Winter Barn (the colourway in your parcel)
Snow in Shadows (the coordinating colourway)
Leeward (the coordinating colourway)
Not too far from the SpaceCadet studio, there’s a road that carries you quite quickly away from all the busyness of the cars and buildings and roads and railway bridges. Western Pennsylvania is hilly and, as you head out into the countryside, the vistas become wide, and the rolling slopes are covered variously in a patchwork of deep woods and wide open fields, with neatly-kept farmhouses and barns dotted along the way. And this year, at least, they are all completely blanketed in a dazzling white.
And that white blanket makes the iconic red barns stand out all the more. Some are freshly painted, their red bright and crisp against the snow. Some have faded after years in the sun, turning a softened russet. It’s wonderful fun to take that long drive, twisting with the terrain and discovering new views around each turn. And then, as the sun moves lower in the sky, the white snow takes on a cool blue tinge where meets in the shadows, and we know it’s time to drive home again.
For this month’s colourways, we explored the hues inspired by this lovely bit of countryside (that’s so near to our studio and yet feels worlds away!). For the barns, we mixed a series of reds, starting with a clear primary red, then softening to a muted rust, and finally an amped-up magenta. We covered the skeins with each of these one by one, creating layers of red that create beautiful depth of colour. And finally, we mixed a very deep, very muted purple and pour that in streak along the skeins as they came up to temperature so the dye struck cleanly and created a beautiful sense of deep winter shadow.
For the coordinating colours, we used those same lovely reds but turned the focus to the cool hues of the snow in shadow. First, we mixed a dyebath of the palest, iciest blue and poured it along all the coordinating skeins. And then we took the dyes we’d mixed previously and used them to create two different effects for each coordinating skein: one where the colours are soft and painterly and one where the variegation is more graphic. Use them in stripes, as accents, or in colour blocking. Or just for a stunning project all on their own.
Ester is smooth and sturdy, the perfect hard-working yarn.

If you know anything about me, you know I love a good, hot cuppa tea -- and when we’re on a cold winter drive like this, I need a great cup to keep it warm as I drink it. And I thought, if you’re anything like me, you’ll need one too! What I love about this lovely cup – beside the happy SpaceCadet in his flying saucer – is that it has a nifty stainless steel straw for cold drinks too!

A very important note: As you all know, different dyelots rarely match perfectly, especially in hand-dyed yarns. Although we will do everything in our power to replicate the yarns from first dyelot, the yarn you receive may not match perfectly. Do bear this in mind if an exact match is important to you. To minimise any visible impact when using hand-dyed yarns, we always recommend alternating skeins every couple of rows in your project.
At SpaceCadet®, we passionately believe that knitting and crocheting make people happier deep down inside and that nothing does that more than working with gorgeous, vibrant yarn. For us, dyeing is a cosmic adventure -- a wonderful process of mixing each shade by hand from primaries and seeing where the colour takes us. The result is yarn that is as exciting for you as it is for us. Come with us and explore the farthest reaches of SpaceCadet® colour!
