Two beautiful options
The first few signs of spring are always so welcome and probably none more so than reappearance of robins. It’s usually their song that catches the attention first, as it accompanies the dawn suddenly one morning where there had been only silence the day before. And then there they are, hopping around the garden, vying with one another for worms and patches of sun and one another’s amorous attention. And with their arrival, everything seems to change in an instant – even if the snow and cold returns, just the fact that the robins are there assures us these are only temporary delays. They are the Harbingers of Spring, and a new season is on its way.
Look closely and you’ll see layers of colours inspired by our spring friends. First, we mixed a lovely pink-tinged beige and let that soak gently into part of the skein. Then we created a beautiful, clear robin’s egg blue, and layered that to the rest of the yarn, allowing it to mix into the first colour in places to create unpredictable and complex spots of blended colour. And then once this underlayer was set, we created a vibrant red – unmistakably robin – and applied that over the whole skein in a way that both masks and reveals the colours underneath. And to our surprise (this is what happens with hand-dyeing!), the red occasionally allowed some of its black dye to break out and create streaks of deep colour, which seem to mimic the colouring of robins even more perfectly!
The result is a colourway that will create a beautifully mottled effect, with the pink-beige and the reds flowing into one another, and that robin’s egg blue lending interest with its soft contrast. Cast on a quick swatch and see what I mean.
For our coordinating colourway, Fledgling, we took that same blue and washed it through soft browns, to echo the hues of a nest full of eggs and the babies that will hatch. This is a colourway for everyone who loves those beautifully muted shades of nature, but with that little spot of robin’s egg brightness.Use it for its own project or combined with the original colourway as a contrast, as stripes, or in colour blocks.

As you know, the gift in our last parcel went astray in the post, so you are getting two gifts in this parcel! The first is a handy pouch, perfectly sized for a small project on dpns or to gather all the notions that get spread out in places unknown. And for the second, I went to our friend Michelle at Beads And Books, and asked her create a second set of stitchmarkers – this time in different colours, to make it easy to know when to work different stitches (perhaps inspired by my own trouble with a recent project, mmmm?). I love that they are removeable, adorable, and they catch the light so beautifully!
Pouches: Normally priced at $7, these these pouches are available to Yarn Alliance members at $4
Stitch Markers (assorted colours): Normally priced at $12.50, these stitchmarker sets are available to club members at the special price of $9
(Yarn pictured not included)
