Two beautiful options
July days are bright and hot and unrelenting and, to be honest, sometimes I find it hard to find yarn that feels right at the height of summer. I want colours that are fresh and cheerful, just as bold as the days are hot without feeling oppressive. The yarn has to be light, of course, and somehow – I know this sounds crazy – cool to the touch. Is that even possible?I chose Maia; it’s bamboo-rich blend is absolutely perfect for summer days and, when knit on larger needles, it creates a fabric that seems to flow almost like water. But that same bamboo means that colours come out incredible softly on Maia, as if they’ve been iced, or like a favourite old pair of jeans. How to recreate the intensity of July’s heat? Yellow was the answer – even when it’s soft and faded, it can’t help but be bold! Just for good measure, though, I doubled the amount of dye I had in mind and, when I lifted the first yarns out of the dyepot, I had to laugh – there’s nothing so bold as the colour of highlighters!Over that amazing colour, I layered on deep turquoise and it turned immediately into a wonderful cool green but look very closely and you’ll see the hint of blue (and look at your choke tie attached to the label – it’s 100% merino -- to see how the colour would have come out on any other yarn). Then, to finish, I added splotches of pure blood red –it was deep and rich and wintery, but softened to the colour of juicy summer melons as soon as it hit the Maia. And as the yarns came up to temperature, I watched the colours swirl and mix and flow that I knew was creating beautiful depth of shade. When I showed it to my assistant, she said immediately, “Oh, it’s like the Summer of Love!” I think she’s on to something.

Peace and Love (a coordinating colourway)
For the coordinating colour, I simply removed the intensity from the original recipe and let the same colours flow over each other so much more softly. You can still see the yellow, now blending into an overall super-soft green and flowing into that same melon, which has become a beautiful dusty rose. It’s subdued and gentle… Peace and Love.
Maia (my-a) is simply a stunning yarn, named after the fourth brightest star in the Pleiades. Spun with bamboo for incredible sheen and beautiful drape, Maia's soft colours and "iced" appearance make it the perfect yarn for your most elegant and eye-catching.

A very important note: As you all know, different dyelots rarely match perfectly, especially in hand-dyed yarns. Although we will do everything in our power to replicate the yarns from first dyelot, the yarn you receive may not match perfectly. Do bear this in mind if an exact match is important to you. To minimise any visible impact when using hand-dyed yarns, we always recommend alternating skeins every couple of rows in your project.

Some time ago, my friend Michelle from Craftyflutterby introduced these wonderful twisting shawlpins, and I have coveted one ever since. So when I ran into her at a recent show, I asked if she’d make a custom pin for the Yarn Alliance, and I love how it’s come out! It’s like the SpaceCadet is spiralling through space – and it will look wonderful on your next project! Normally priced at $20, they're available to club members for just $16.
