It has been raining for days. Every morning the sky overcast, every afternoon seems to kick the wind up and churn the clouds until the raindrops begin to fall. Tentatively at first – plink plink plink – and then gathering speed and momentum the heavens open and the rain comes down in sheets. And then, just like that, it dies down again, and I am left with the same grey clouds and no evidence of all the drama, bar the grass, now wet and glistening.
But I don’t mind – I really don’t. Because what those overcast skies and bursts of rain do is bring me what I’ve longed for after the never-ending, barren winter: deep, luscious, life-affirming green. The world is coming back to life, and there are shoots in my flower bed, buds on my trees, and the grass is renewing and refreshing itself after a long winter’s nap. There are weeds too – more than I can keep up with – but I can live with that because they, too, are green.
I know the sun will come eventually and banish the grey and, after a time, burn the green to dry gold. But for now I am happy, with the rain coming down, the fresh wind blowing winter away, and the wonderful green as everything Sprouts anew.
For this colourway, I went with a very very gently variegated green that flows softly from a rich Kelly grass-green in the center out to the yellow-green of new shoots at one end and an almost Bluegrass-teal at the other. And where they meet up along the way, different hues and tones intermingling along the length of the skein or in the stitches as it’s knit or crocheted, the effect is a patchwork of spring greens --the world come to life again.
