Two beautiful options
For this colourway, we have a real treat: a guest yarn that the whole SpaceCadet crew and I are super excited about! With 20% yak fiber, it’s a truly a special treat and I think you’re going to enjoy knitting or crocheting with it as much as we enjoyed dyeing it.
Spiced Plums (the colourway in your parcel)
Plum Tree (a coordinating colourway)
Yak is known for being warmer, softer, and more breathable than many other fibers, including even merino, and it’s suitable for so many different projects. And with its tight twist and lovely smooth finish, this yarn knits up beautifully on small needles for socks or, when worked with larger needles or a larger hook, creates a delightfully light fabric for shawls or sweaters. (I’ve been knitting on US3s but I’m keen to try on 5s or 6s next).
But the truth is that yak presents a real challenge for a dyer: unlike merino, it’s not blank canvas and the fiber’s naturally dark colour affects the way the yarn takes dye, lending itself more inherently to deep and rich hues. So inspired by summer fruits, we chose colours to bring out the very best of the yarn’s natural properties.
That began with submersion into a rich and bright rust, and was followed by a layer of vibrant purple that the yak fiber changed immediately to a beautiful deep plum. And here’s the fun part: we purposely left a tiny pop of the skein’s undyed colour for contrast. On its own, the yarn is a lovely dark oatmeal shade but, next to the plum, its natural colour takes on an almost-green cast that will create delightful flecks of heathered colour in your project. But to me, the very best part is how the purple dye breaks along its edge to give the tiniest pops of blue (they’re the colour that will have me saying, “Just one more row!” late into the night!)
For the coordinating colourway, we decided to let the natural colour of the yak fiber take center stage, with the plum and rust acting as streaks of colour against the undyed skein, with little flecks of black for added contrast. And again, just look at the beautiful effects where those colours broke out at their edges! Use it for its own project or combined with the original colourway as a contrast, as stripes, or in colour blocks.
Every now and then we explore a Guest Yarn and this one's beautiful twist and luxurious yak fiber is just so exciting!

A very important note: As you all know, different dyelots rarely match perfectly, especially in hand-dyed yarns. Although we will do everything in our power to replicate the yarns from first dyelot, the yarn you receive may not match perfectly. Do bear this in mind if an exact match is important to you. To minimise any visible impact when using hand-dyed yarns, we always recommend alternating skeins every couple of rows in your project.
At SpaceCadet®, we passionately believe that knitting and crocheting make people happier deep down inside and that nothing does that more than working with gorgeous, vibrant yarn. For us, dyeing is a cosmic adventure -- a wonderful process of mixing each shade by hand from primaries and seeing where the colour takes us. The result is yarn that is as exciting for you as it is for us. Come with us and explore the farthest reaches of SpaceCadet® colour!
