Two beautiful options
Naming colourways can be the hardest part of the whole dyeing process. I’m serious. You might think that it would be the coming up with colourways or making sure they are balanced and repeatable but, once you’ve got a couple thousand hours of dyeing experience under your belt, that’s not such a challenge anymore. But the naming never seems to get easier. We try one name, and then another… how about this…? How about that…? The more we think about it, the hard it becomes.
For this colourway, I wanted to go for some serious intensity. As much as I love autumn, I know it means we are headed into a season of grey skies and dark days and never-ending cold, and I suddenly wanted to dye something wonderfully vibrant and compelling. So we started with deep berry colours and let them flow into an equally deep purple, and dipped them into the pots in groups so they soaked the dye up slowly, every skein absorbing the colour differently and creating completely unique shades and patterns. The thing I love most is the way the colours blend in the place where the berry and purple join – turn your skein over until you find it.
But just as there is no day without night or good without bad, I think all bright colours need to be balanced by some moodier shades. So as the first layer of colour was starting to set, we poured washes of yet more colour over them, creating flashes of greens, browns, rusts, and golds to intensify the original hues. And again, no two skeins took the colour washes the same way.
The result is a colourway that is both bright and moody, complex and still coordinated. When I stack several skeins together, they all blend into a cohesive pile of loveliness (yep, that’s a technical term). But when I examine the skeins individually, each is like no one other.
Oh and the name? I was hopeless. But this colourway coordinates with our other (bad tempered) colourways Tantrum, Gobsmack, and Troublemaker, so when I asked my assistants for help, they immediately suggested “Argumentative” – and I laughed out loud.
For the coordinating colourway, we chose a strong contrast: shades of golden yellow flowing into the same deep khaki green that appeared in some (but not all) of the original skeins. I love it as a foil to the Argumentative’s jewel tones, and as a wonderful option for anyone who loves more muted, natural colours. And of course the SpaceCadet Crew named it better than I ever could: “Backtalk.” Try it blended with our colourway "Honey".
