Two beautiful options
Standing by the water’s edge, nature’s palette is soft and subdued. Sand skitters across the dunes that rise and fall in imitation of the ocean waves, and the beachgrass ripples gently in the breeze. The sun is bright but the sky soft, and the colours all around are gentle: cool blues and aquas in the water, pale taupes and burnished golds on the beach, faded yellow-greens in the grasses. These are the colours of long, tranquil summer days by the sea… no clocks and no schedules… a time of refreshing and renewing that stretches out, like the ocean itself, as far as the eye can see.
To dye this colourway, we started with those soft sea-blues and applied it to the skeins in a way that ensured that the colour struck more deeply in some areas and paler in others to create depth of shade. They we added in a warm gold and twisted the skeins so that this second colour struck randomly, creating gorgeous aquas where it flowed into the deepest blues, and beachgrass greens where the colours were lighter, and finally sandy shades where it struck undyed fibers. And as the colour moved through the dyebath, we gently swirled the skeins around to blend hue into hue and create an amazing. The result is a colourway that with that soft, painterly flow that evokes everything about the soft palette of the beach.
And as hard as it may be to believe, the coordinating colour is even softer. To create it, we took those same colours and re-imagined them pale and barely there, completely faded in that bright summer sunshine. From a distance, the colourway looks almost creamy but get closer and you can see all those same shades – the aquas, greens, blues, and golds – hiding in plain sight, waiting to reveal themselves as you work from stitch to stitch. Use this colourway on its own for a super-subtle summer wrap, or use it as a contrast to highlight the colours of the skein in your parcel in a larger project.
