Two beautiful options
Though I am not a gardener by any stretch of the imagination, I absolutely love it when the flowers around my house (kindly planted by the previous owner) burst into bloom each spring. There is a beautiful peony near the entrance to my porch that I am particularly fond off. Once I rescue it from the (remarkably fast-growing) weeds that always threaten to smother it, it rewards me by producing the most spectacular pink blooms – some of them six inches across!
You might think those beautiful flowers would be the inspiration for this month’s SpaceMonster colourway -- and they almost were, but not quite. Because as much as I love the showy flowers vying for everyone’s attention, I actually love the foliage just as much. The leaves of my peony plant are a series stunning greens: some dark and intense, some young and paler, all waxy and cool, and a perfect foil to the heat of the day. I find them mesmerising and so I couldn’t help but take those beautiful leaves and their spectrum of greens as my inspiration.
For this colourway, I chose Capella, our beautiful worsted single ply yarn, because I knew the way it soaks up dye would really reflect the range of greens the way I wanted to capture them. I started with a base of paler, almost-mint and then added in a deeper, richer shade so that the two ran together and created layers of colour. I admit, I couldn’t help but add in a little of the peonies themselves, so there’s that wonderful burst of bright pink, that pales in places to almost white. Knitted or crocheted together, they’ll recreate the beauty of the peony plant that I find so inspiring.
For the coordinating colourway, it is all about the peonies! For this yarn, I wanted to reflect the blooms in my garden in their full glory, capturing all the wonderful shades of that beautiful pink and letting it settle naturally across the yarn. Pick up a skein or two and use them to create a larger project, in stripes as a bright contrast, as an accent or to create a coordinating project.
