It’s been a strange winter here — far warmer than it ought to have been, punctuated by quite spectacular snow storms. And though a winter like this doesn’t quite feel right, I’ve noticed that the sunsets have been quite striking. More than that, the thing that’s caught my eye particularly has been what happens after the sun sets. In those few moments, the sky goes intensely blue — deep and clear — and the horizon loses a lot of the bright oranges and fuchsias that we think of with sunsets and replaces them with a kind of soft Afterglow that is just breathtaking.
Pale yellow on the horizon, it quickly runs through the whole spectrum of colour, from warm apricots to gentle pinks, dipping into soft green in places before lifting up into the purples and blues of the night sky. I stand at my window sipping my tea and wonder that such a range of colours can exist side-by-side, all so distinct and clear ...and yet all merging into one another at the same time. Amazing!
So I approached the dyepots this month with the same feeling of freedom and spontaneity. A multistep process, the dyeing of each skein of Afterglow follows the same framework but, instead of employing very controlled dyeing techniques (such as hand-painting), I went with a series of immersions that allowed the colour to be absorbed and redistributed more organically.
Just like the Afterglow in the night sky each evening, no two skeins are exactly alike — the colours in the yarn finding their places as naturally as do the colours in the stratosphere. And as you cast on your project and begin to turn yarn into stitches, you will recreate, in a way, that same sense of wonder as the colours melt and merge ...and yet sit so beautifully alongside one another.
Fiber Content: 100% Superwash Merino; 4-ply
