Two beautiful options
The SpaceCadet studio is located on winding road tucked between two steep wooded hills, and, even though we can hear the plaintive whistles of freight trains nearby, it’s easy to forget we’re less than a mile from rusting hulks of old steel mills. We often see deer and wild turkey on the hill behind the studio. There’s a pair of red-tailed hawks that float on the breeze overhead. And running alongside the road, beneath the tree canopy and layers of carved rock, is a lovely meandering stream.
This winter, nature has seemed confused. For a few days, it was ridiculously warm for the dead of winter -- in the low 60s – and the stream flowed happily, sparkling in the sunlight. The vegetation was confused too: tiny shoots appeared here and there from beneath autumn’s discarded leaves, and the moss by the water’s edge grew greener. And then, one night, the season remember itself and we woke to freezing temperatures and drifting snow. The stream narrowed, thin shelves of ice forming on its edges. And as the temperature dropped over the new few days, the ice reached across and met in the middle – first as dark ice over cold water, and then in white, the deer tracks clear in the fresh snow.
Two days later, the temperatures rose as quickly as they had dropped. The stream swelled as, at the edge of the water, the little shoots tried again in their cold confusion -- reaching up through the last of the ice and snow to cast a soft green against cold blue and old grey.
For this colourway, I really wanted to capture the cold ice at the water’s edge, the darkness of the water, and the faintest hint of those green shoots. We started with that green, keeping it soft and timid, and added in a lovely clean, crisp pale blue. Those two on their own were so pretty I almost left them as they were, but then I realised I really wanted the added dimension of that grey beneath the surface of the water. I hope that, as you knit or crochet with this yarn, the colours flow and form combinations as beautiful and sublime as the soft shoots pushing through cold ice by the water’s edge.
