Two beautiful options
There is a little grey squirrel who likes to sit on my back porch and watch me as I drink my coffee. Every morning, he’s there perched on a railing with his big fuzzy tail curled up over his head, looking beautiful in his winter coat in so many beautiful shades of grey and waiting for me to come and keep him company.
(At least, I tell myself that’s what he’s doing – it may be the warm air billowing from the dryer vent that is really what attracts him, but where’s the fun in that?)
And then, one snowy morning, there was another squirrel, this time in a nearby tree but chattering wildly at my friend huddled on the porch, and its coat was tinged with a rich red-brown that reminded me of the sweet red squirrels I knew in England.
And just like that, I knew I had our next SpaceMonster colourway: the grey skies and the snow drifts, my little grey friend on the porch and the red-brown interloper in the tree.
Layering the dye onto the yarn in the studio, the colours flowed together beautifully. First the grey, darker at one end like the fur on my friend’s back and then allowed to run down the skein to create a softer colour like the fur on his belly. And then we mixed a beautiful brown-rust and poured that over the skeins, again letting the colour intensify in places and fade out again. Finally, we added a soft wash of purple, like the shadows of the tree on the snow below, and let it settle where-ever it would amongst the other colours.
The result is a colourway that is both reads as neutrals and yet is full of intriguing colour. Try combining it with our colourways Drizzle, Sliver, or Dark Skies to highlight the grey squirrel; Gentle or Headstrong to bring out the red squirrel; and Plume or That’s What She Said to pull out those soft purple shadows. If you follow me on Instagram or Facebook, you know I love my journals and notebooks – in fact, starting my day mindfully by planning it in my notebook over a cup of coffee is what I’m usually doing when that little squirrel comes to call. So as we all begin a new year, full of fresh promises and plans made, a brand new custom SpaceMonster notebook cover from my friend Allena at StarKnits felt like the perfect gift to get it started right! Sized to fit over an A5 journal (such as Leuchtterm 1917 bullet journal or, my favourite, a Rhodia Goalbook) and featuring our happy SpaceMonster, it’s all ready to inspire a wonderful (and mindful) 2019!
