Two beautiful options
This time of year feels deeper and richer than any other. Where Spring feels fresh and green, Summer soft golden yellow, and Autumn crisp and russet, this time of year is the glow of candles, the soft brush of pine needles, the steam rising from a piping-hot bowl of stew, and again and again, reds.
So many things this time of year are beautiful deep reds that it’s hard to know which to choose. Holiday decorations are a bright and proud red, holly berry red is warm and squeaky, cranberry sauce is red with tang, and cardinals all shades of red, with the boldest hue on their crests.
But as the nights draw in (and the stew is served up), the red I like most is generously served in a glass, left to warm and catch the air a little, poured from a bottle with a seal and a label that says “Reserve.” I like to watch the colour change as I drink it – first deep and opaque and almost purple when the glass is full, then becoming lighter as it goes down, translucent and warm in the candlelight catches it, with hints of rust at first, fading to pink… and then, finally, the last few drops holding their own and the colour deepening before… gone. Not the brightest red of the season, nor the purest, but when the nights are dark and the house is warmed with company and a good dinner, I think it’s probably the best red.
To capture the myriad reds in my glass of wine, I really worked on the layers for this colourway. Beginning with a soft wash of pink first, I immersed it in two dyebaths to deepen the colour across the skein. Doubling the dye this way creates a richness combined with an uneven-ness that makes the yarn much more interesting to work with. Then I carefully added in a cooler shade to the dyebath and then a warmer hue, to capture the colour changes from opaque to candlelit. Finally, a wash of deep purple to finish it off, and we have a colourway that really expresses everything I see that lovely glass of wine.
The companion colourway, Blue Note (a nod to the music I love to accompany a nice glass of red) is designed to contrast beautifully with Reserve’s reds and coordinate with that wash of purple . Use it as an accent, for stripes, or to create a coordinating project.
I’m such a fan of Amanda Pawley’s beautifully pottery and, with the cold weather nipping at your nose (and fingers) each morning, what better gift than a hand-thrown travel mug for your tea or coffee (or… mmmm… hot chocolate)? Created especially for us and displaying our happy SpaceMonster on one side, it will keep your drink handy, your fingers warm enough to knit or crochet ...and your club member credentials proudly on show! (And don’t forget to look for Amanda’s signature paw print!)
Once our stock of the travel mugs has sold out, they will be available for custom order for two weeks. The listing will be marked as sold out at 11.59pm (EST) on Jan 1 2017 and delivery of custom-ordered mugs is expected around the beginning of February 2017.
