Two beautiful options
Summer may not be what any of us expected it to be this year. The expectation that it will involve big family gatherings or lazy days by the beach has had to be set to one side as we all navigate the reality of this new world. But knitting and crocheting are for escaping that reality, and relaxing into the rhythm of the stitches …and maybe into the world we’d rather be living in.
So, for this colourway, we decided to escape into the colours of the summer we didn’t get to have, and imagined ourselves floating lazily along the shore of a beautiful tropical isle, the sun shining down on jewel-toned waters, the blue-green waves bobbing gently at the surface, and occasionally revealing deep purples underneath. It’s everything the best summer vacation ought to be, all wrapped up in a skein of yarn.
We began with a pop of bright lime green in the center of the skein. Perhaps it’s an umbrella drink or a tropical bird… I’m not sure but it just felt so right for our imaginary vacation island. And then we layered on a beautifully rich teal blue – it’s dusky and saturated and so juicy – and let that run into the lime, forming an ombre flow of greens where the two met. And then we dyed a stunningly rich purple and let that blend into the lime from the other direction and, to be honest, I think the muted, nuanced colours the two create where they meet are simply wonderful – a subtle, multihued foil to the richness of the rest of the skein.
So, this summer may have been different from what we’d all hoped but, at least in this glorious colourway, we have a way to take a Tropical Escape together. Cast on and set yourself adrift…
For the coordinating colourway, Spindrift, we lightened those same hues until they were soft and sun-bleached. And because the dye concentration was less, the colours do much more nuanced and interesting things where they blend. Look closely and you’ll see beautiful glazing effects where one layer washes over another, creating complex shades that will be so much fun as you work just one more row! Use itto add depth and interest to a larger project, to work as a contrast, as stripes, or in colour blocks.
