Two beautiful options
Ah, Pittsburgh in the Spring! Ok, well, it isn't Paris by any comparison but, after a long winter, springtime is welcome. And I am always struck, as the warmer weather rolls round and the landscape starts to bloom, by the contrast between the old industrial roots of this city and the new growth laying claim to it. As beautiful and vibrant as this town is (and it is), it has a lot of rust around the edges. The most ornate bridges are a century old, there are railway lines crisscrossing the rivers, and the bones of old steel mills and ironworks are dotted everywhere. And in their neglected corners or at the seams, a warm patina of corrosion forms: rust and old paint, moss and the last of autumn's leaves.
But when the warm weather arrives, those same neglected corners are where Spring's new growth can thrive unnoticed, unmown, and untamed. And the contrast between the freshest, brightest, virgin greens standing against the city's most weathered backdrops is simply breathtaking -- and one I can never get enough of.
For this yarn, we started with that green -- bursting with freshness, so bright it's almost juicy -- and we let it cover almost the whole skein. And, at one end, letting it tease out almost to a blue, the way the roots of fresh spring shoots sometimes do. Then, we mixed a wonderful rich rust and, applying it carefully, let it soak in deeply at one end before running it gently across the skein so that, where the rust and the green meet, they form that lovely weathered patina that Pittsburgh does so well.
For the coordinating colourway, New Growth, I just had to highlight that wonderful spring green, so we pulled it out from the first colourway and then dyed it in a layered way, to allow the colour to change in intensity along the skein. Worked up, it will give a wonderful patchwork of different depths of shade. Use it to create a larger project, striped as a bright contrast with Corrosion, as an accent or to create a coordinating project.
