Two beautiful options
The first snowfall came as something of a shock to me this year – far earlier than I expected and startlingly bright in the fresh morning sunshine. It wasn’t a particularly deep snowfall, barely covering the remnants of autumn’s last leaves (and, if I’m honest, it was more shadow than white) but, as I curled up on the couch with a cup of tea to contemplate the arrival of winter, a bright red cardinal landed in a nearby tree and noisily expressed his thoughts on this abrupt change. It was such a stark image – his beautiful red and black plumage against the fresh white snow and deep grey shadows – that I knew we simply had to capture it in a colourway.
We started, of course, with bare skeins (which are never quite white enough to really reflect the colour of snow but sheep-colour is such a lovely alternative) and gently layered on a soft grey, twisting the skeins as we added more dye to gradually build up the colour until it captured the dark of the tree branches against the snow. Then a slow immersion into a beautiful and bright cardinal red, flecked with deep black, that we allowed to soak for a long time to give a real richness to the colour. And then we brought the dyepots up to temperature very slowly to let the colours break out a little and give us just a hint those last autumn leaves.
The result is a yarn that beautifully reflects the stark colours of winter, softened where the colours meet, and brightened by the cheery plumage of that very Opinionated Cardinal!
Fiber Content: 90% Superwash Merino, 10% Nylon; 8-ply
Weight: Fingering; Each skein is approximately 3.5oz/100g, and the yarn contains approximately 420 yards per 100g
If you were a club member last season, you’ll remember the beautiful stitchmarkers that Michelle at Books and Beads made for us. Well, when she sent my set, she packaged them in a sweet little tin that she’d customised with the SpaceCadet and I absolutely knew I had to get her to make one for each of our club members too! So here it is, a lovely little spot to safely keep your stitchmarkers or other notions, with the happy SpaceCadet in his flying saucer zipping across the front.
Normally priced at $6.50, these tins are available to club members for $4.99.
