  • Wet Cobblestones (a coordinating colourway)
  • Leaf Piles (a second coordinating colourway)

The Inspiration

Imagine a cobblestoned street meandering down a steep hill, with thatched cottages lining on one side and a view across gentle green fields stretching out into the distance. It’s been raining and the soft grey and brown surfaces of the cobbles shine a gently where the late summer sun hits their edges, creating little shadows that define each one. A sudden breeze sends a flurry of leaves from a nearby tree skittering across them, rustling and twisting, until they slow and then stick to the damp stones, creating a collage of bright red and gold splodges against the muted hues of the cobbles beneath them. And in that instant, the feeling changes from the last moments late summer to the first hints of autumn, and brings all the cosy promises of the new season.
In my mind, I’m seeing Gold Hill, very near to where I used to live in the rural southwest of Britain. You may be seeing a street in New England or on the campus of a grand old university. Or imagining a scene from a much loved book, as real in your mind as any street you’ve walked in real life. Regardless, there is something beautiful in the change of seasons. And it was that tiniest of details – a few fallen leaves dancing across cobblestones – that sparked the inspiration for this beautiful colourway.

The Result

We began by mixing a beautiful mid-grey hue, twisting the skeins so the colour struck with differing intensities along each. Then we layered on light-clay hue, and again let it flow across the yarn so it created shades ranging from terracotta to putty. Then we gently increased the heat under the dyepots. Once they came up to temperature, we added splodges of that lovely intense red and then of the rich gold, keeping them distinct across most of the skein but allowing them to mingle a little here and there. Look at how the underlying stone colours influence both the red and yellow too!

Two Bonus Colourways!

When it came to the coordinating colourway, we couldn’t help ourselves… and created two of them! For the first, Wet Cobblestones, we allowed those lovely grey and clay shades to take center stage. And for the second, Leaf Piles, we saturated the whole skein in the red and gold shades, creating all the rich hues of autumn leaves, and then created depth by dipping each one in a lovely charcoal grey. Use it to work as a contrast, as stripes, or in colour blocks.

  • An important note about skein matchingAs you all know, different dyelots rarely match perfectly, especially in hand-dyed yarns, and even more especially in a colourway as  variegated as this one. Although we will do everything in our power to replicate the yarns from first dyelot, the yarn you receive may not match perfectly. Do bear this in mind if an exact match is important to you. To minimise any visible impact when using hand-dyed yarns, we always recommend alternating skeins every couple of rows in your project.
