The Colourways:

Three beautiful options

  • Sundown (the painterly colourway in your parcel)
  • Shadowed Path (a semi-solid coordinating colourway)
  • Bike Tour (a graphic coordinating colourway)
A few weeks ago, on a day that mixed late summer sun and with a soft early autumn chill, my assistant Jade and I were sitting on my porch discussing colourway ideas.  We had been struggling with our inspiration for the Yarn Alliance.  I’d suggest something and she’d wrinkle her nose…  She’d suggested something different and I’d tilt my head…  nothing felt quite right to either of us.

But it was a perfect day for biking – no longer too hot to enjoy the ride and not yet so cool that you’d notice the weather – and one of our bikes was parked right next to the porch.  It’s a lovely touring bike, with a comfy seat, gently curved handlebars, and a rather genteel luggage rack.  And it’s decorated with delightfully retro paint details in a lovely combination of cream, teal, golden yellow, and deep brown.  We both looked over at the bike at the same moment.

“That’s a great set of colours!”… “Ohhh, let’s a colourway based on that!”… “YES!”  Sometimes, inspiration is that simple.

At the studio, we mixed up three bowls -- the yellow, the teal, and the brown – and applied them in different ways.  For Sundown, your painterly skein, we layered the hues one at a time, letting them overlap in places and peek through in others.  I love the play of colour and shadow – and that soft pop of sunlit gold! To me, it looks exactly like a leisurely bike ride on a late afternoon.

For Shadowed Path, we focused on the delicious combination of teal and brown that will work up into a beautifully complex a (semi-)semi-solid.  And for Bike Tour, we gave each colour room to shine on its own, creating a colourway with graphic intrigue!

Celeste is a smooth and light yarn that gives an incredibly generous 490yds per skein.

I ask Maria at A Needle Runs Through It to create these handy little gauge measures.  Marked with both inches and centimeters, they’re just the right size to both help you get gauge and to fit in even the smallest project bag. And look closely, and you’ll see our happy SpaceCadet in his flying saucer...  Perfect!

  • A very important note: As you all know, different dyelots rarely match perfectly, especially in hand-dyed yarns. Although we will do everything in our power to replicate the yarns from first dyelot, the yarn you receive may not match perfectly. Do bear this in mind if an exact match is important to you. To minimise any visible impact when using hand-dyed yarns, we always recommend alternating skeins every couple of rows in your project.

At SpaceCadet®, we passionately believe that knitting and crocheting make people happier deep down inside and that nothing does that more than working with gorgeous, vibrant yarn. For us, dyeing is a cosmic adventure -- a wonderful process of mixing each shade by hand from primaries and seeing where the colour takes us. The result is yarn that is as exciting for you as it is for us. Come with us and explore the farthest reaches of SpaceCadet® colour!
