Two beautiful options
Ever since the space probe Juno began orbiting Jupiter, it’s been so exciting to realise all the data it will be able to send back to us about the enormous gas giant just a couple of doors over from us. And as the news of Juno’s success was just breaking as I was preparing to dye this month’s Yarn Alliance, I knew I wanted it to be the inspiration for the colourway.
But I found I had a little dilemma – a literal interpretation of Juno and Jupiter produced colours I didn’t find nearly as inspiring as the mission itself. Jupiter is a study in taupes and greys, and Juno is… well, it’s a spacecraft. What I was really inspired by was the beauty of the achievement – of being able to conceive and build a ship that can survive the drama of a launch, travel such distances, serenely orbit a terrifyingly huge planet, and send back to Earth such a wealth of knowledge… that was where the inspiration lay! And so I chose colours that, while they have little to do with the physical realities of the mission, capture for me the gracefulness of the achievement.
I began with a deep purple – elegant and simple -- that I then let flow into a rich maroon. Where are those deep and rich colours, you ask? Because Maia has such a high bamboo content, colours always come out softer and almost “iced” – a really beautiful effect – but a clue can been found on the choke ties, which are 100% merino, and took on the original colour of the dyebath. Pretty cool, huh? Look closer still and you’ll see even more colours: places where the graceful purples suddenly dive into a discordant yellowy-green – a visual representation of the inherent danger and difficulty of such an ambitious mission.
Now, I have to tell you, my irrational (or not?) fear about these sorts of space explorations is that maybe, one day, we will inadvertently pick up some sort of toxic organism that will hitch a ride back and wipe us all out. And so, even though I know Juno won’t actually be returning to Earth, I couldn’t help running with that as the inspiration for a coordinating skein!
Fiber Content: 80% Bamboo, 20% Superwash Merino; 4-ply
