Two beautiful options
Of all the planets in our solar system, Saturn and its rings may be the most beautiful so, I have to admit, I was sad when the Cassini space probe came to its end, burning up in the planet’s atmosphere. But the discoveries it made in its 13 years in orbit were extraordinary – most especially the possibility of water (and life!) on the moon Enceladus (though as exciting as the idea of discovering life there might be… it makes me nervous too. Ever since I saw War of the Worlds as a kid -- the classic 1953 version, thank you very much -- I’ve known that no good can come from an alien encounter!).
So as I stood in front of the dyepots thinking how to approach the next Yarn Alliance colourway, all the exciting -- and daunting -- possibilities of that water were on my mind. I started blending colours, beginning with an icy blue base that I let flow gently into an equally icy teal green (hold the two ends of your skein together and you’ll notice the subtle variation). And then, inspired by that cold moon floating through the darkness of space, I layered on a deep blue-purple and let the dye run down along the yarn, creating stunning new shades where-ever it absorbed and blended with the colours underneath. As you knit or crochet, the colours will flow and combine into a patchwork of blues, greens, and purples that explore the cool end of the colour spectrum.
For the coordinating colourway, I pulled that icy blue and teal out and let them stand on their own. I love the softness of the colours and the way they subtly shift along the length of the yarn. And they will do the same in your knitting and crochet! Use this colourway to create a larger project, striped in a bright contrast to Is There Life…, as an accent along a hem or cuff, or on its own to create a coordinating project.
