Two beautiful options
It’s funny how things go when we’re creating a new colourway. Sometimes I see the colourway in my head, fully formed and just ready to be dyed. Sometimes it even has its name before I’ve begun. Other times, I just feel myself drawn to a colour and I know I want to explore it. I might have been inspired by something I saw around me, or just feeling playful. Those colourways always get their names once they’re done and I can see what they’ve become. This colourway was the second type.
We knew we wanted to play with blues and the kind of lovely wash-y dyeing effects that work so well with it. But we wanted the colourway to be more complex than that, with layers of different hues flowing into one another. So we began first with a wash of grey and then added another of gentle green, letting them blend together where-ever they met. Then we mixed up a lovely and rich blue and carefully layered it over the other colours so that it struck them unevenly: covering them in some places and allowing them to show through in others. It looked lovely as we turned up the heat to set the dye.
But when the skeins had dried, we realised that our soft green had been a little too soft – it all but disappeared. So we quickly wet the skeins out again and refreshed it: a little more green adding yet another layer of complexity and, this time, the effect was perfect. When the SpaceCadet crew got together to name them, I said, “What do you see in the skeins? I see the sea.” And they all agreed that that was the name!
For the coordinating colour, we took that same soft green as our base, turned up the grey to a lovely charcoal, and then let those two colours shine all on their own. The result is a rich and deep colourway that completely lives up to the name Abyss.

Extra Stitch Markers and Notions Dishes!
After the little hiccup with the last gift, we went to two wonderful makers for this parcel! Michelle at Beads And Books created a set of beautiful stitchmarkers that shine like jewels against your project. And our lovely friend Amanda at Pawley Studio hand-crafted a sweet little notion dish to keep them. Don’t they both make you want to cake up your yarn and cast on right now?!?
At SpaceCadet®, we passionately believe that knitting and crocheting make people happier deep down inside and that nothing does that more than working with gorgeous, vibrant yarn.
