Two beautiful options
A few years ago, on a family trip to the seaside, I had the strangest experience. One evening, long after the sun had gone down, I went out to the beach alone. I sat tucked into the edge of the dunes, hidden amongst tall grasses just where the sand began to flatten into the beach, and wrapped my arms around my knees and gazed out at the dark water and the dark sky. The stars sparkled against the inky blackness and the quarter-moon cast just enough light to illuminate the tips of the waves before they crashed down onto the shore.
And I was suddenly struck by the by the way the horizon was lost to the darkness of both sea and sky as they blended into one another. The water looked as deep as the heavens were high, as though you might step into the water like stepping off a shelf and drop instantly to the darkest depths below. And suddenly the serene scene before me felt anything but.
Try as I might, I couldn’t shake this strangely unsettling sensation. That darkness above and darkness below had disquieted a part of my imagination that it would not let go. So I focused instead on my toes pushed reassuringly into the still-warm sand of the dunes, and listened to the grasses around me sway gently in the wind. And then I took a deep breath and walked back to the house, where welcoming friends – and comforting light – awaited me.
To dye this beautiful skein, we first mixed three shades of sea-blues: one clear and bright, one tinged a slightly green, and one deep and inky. Then we passed the skeins through the lighter colours first, allowing the bright blue and greenish blue to spread along the skein, softening in intensity as they did. The we used a special resist-dyeing technique to layer over that rich, inky blue and let it soak in deep into the fibers.
Look for the merino choke-tie to see just how dark that last blue truly is. And then marvel along with me at the way bamboo-rich Maia reinterprets that very same hue into the soft sheen of moonlit water.
For the coordinating colourway, Into The Light, we employed those same three blues and, this time, allowed the lovely and light natural colour of the yarn to shine through. And in doing so, the whole tone of the skein changes! Now the blues look soft and gentle, so summery and welcoming.
Fiber Content: 80% Bamboo, 20% Superwash Merino; 4-ply
Weight: Fingering; Each skein is approximately 3.5oz/100g, and the yarn contains approximately 400 yards per 100g
