Three beautiful options
I usually write these notes with the information about the yarn up at the top and the details about the gift at the bottom, but this time is different. It has to be, because for this yarn, the gift is the inspiration. So let’s start at the beginning…
I have been a fan of Melissa Jean’s buttons for years (have you seen them? melissajean.net). Handmade of porcelain, they are sweet and detailed and the perfect accompaniment to any handknit. So I asked her to design a special Yarn Alliance button for us …but she came back with an intriguing proposition: she suggested she create for us a special scoop for tea, coffee, and hot chocolate.
With winter setting in, I am almost never without a cup of tea in my hands (to keep my fingers warm and my mind settled) and so it sounded absolutely perfect. And then, as I sat with (yet another) cup of tea contemplating a colourway to dye, the answered seemed obvious. Grounded sprang into my mind immediately.
When you look at your skein, you are seeing all the colours of warm winter drinks: the rich deep browns of coffee or hot chocolate, ranging from the deepest shades where its most intense to the lovely softer colours after the cream has been added. And that fades out at either end into the colours of my two favourite types of tea: the sublime shades of green teas and the crisp brightness of those teas that turn golden in the cup.
To be honest, I wasn’t quite sure how those three elements would work together but, as soon as I pulled it out of the dyepot, I knew it was the right choice. I love how the colours both blend and bounce off one another, and I know they are going to look spectacular together in your project, whether you use them in knit or crochet.
Now, for the coordinating colour… this is interesting. You know how you see images of the fruit of the coffee bean plant and it’s a surprising dusky pinkish-red? It’s actually called a cherry (and the bean is actually a seed, not a bean, but I digress…) and I thought I’d explore that for the coordinating colour. I couldn’t decide whether to go for a brighter colourway or a darker version, so I mixed two dyebaths and started playing. And once I pulled them out… I still couldn’t decide! When I showed them to my assistant, she suggested we go with both. And so that’s what we did. You’ll see in the options both Percolate 1 and Percolate 2 (the tags had already been printed back when I thought there would be only one colourway). Both of them capture the complex colours of the coffee cherry …and both coordinate beautifully with Grounded. I wish you more luck in choosing than I had!
