The Colourways:

Two beautiful options

  • Wakey Wakey (the colourway in your parcel)
  • Sunny Side (a painterly coordinating colourway)
  • Good Egg (a semi-solid coordinating colourway)
These days, my assistant and I have our meetings outdoors as much as possible and, now that the weather has turned the for the better, that’s much easier.  …Except on the day that we developed this lovely colourway!
The sun shone beautifully on us for the first half of our meeting, sending golden rays across the hills and lulling us into a false sense of security.  Because all that way, grey clouds were forming behind us and marching across the sky.  And by the time we noticed, the temperature had dropped 5 degrees and the wind had turned gusty.

And for the rest of our meeting, we watched a great battle ensue, between the bright happy sunshine and the deep angry clouds as they fought to control the day.  It didn’t stop our meeting (we’re waterproof! and intrepid!) but it did change the direction of the conversation.  I don’t now recall what colours we had been planning to dye but, suddenly, nothing seemed as inspiring as the show that the day’s weather had given us, and the glorious mix of bright golden sunshine and dark grey clouds..

To dye this colourway, we chose Oriana, a hardworking fingering that wears like iron but gives wonderful drape and softness the more its used.  We first mixed up a gorgeously happy and bright yellow, and then tempered it a bit with hints of gold and a drop or two of black.  We let that hue disperse up one half the skein, fading as it ran out of energy.  Then we mixed a gorgeous pure grey, deep and intense, and washed it over the other end of the skein, allowing it to fade at the edges as it soaked the yarn.  And in between, we left the natural colour of the wool to act as contrast.  The result is a stunningly graphic variegated yarn in two classic hues, that will play off each other beautifully in your finished project.

For the coordinating colourways, we used the same hues but changed our dyeing techniques to create entirely different effects!  For the first one, we swished the yarn through the dyepots, to encourage a more painterly effect that will work up into something mimicking watercolours.  And in the other, we allowed the skeins to soak leisurely in the golden dyebath for a semi-solid colourway, with just a hint of cloudy-grey washed over it. See the enclosed card to check them out.

(And the names? They’ve nothing to do with the weather but when we saw that lovely yellow once it had dried, we couldn’t help ourselves!)

  • A very important note: As you all know, different dyelots rarely match perfectly, especially in hand-dyed yarns. Although we will do everything in our power to replicate the yarns from first dyelot, the yarn you receive may not match perfectly. Do bear this in mind if an exact match is important to you. To minimise any visible impact when using hand-dyed yarns, we always recommend alternating skeins every couple of rows in your project.

Bonus! Extra Notions Pouches!

I don’t know about you, but I can never (ever ever!) find my darning needles or measuring tape.  They move from project bag to project bag until… I completely lose track of which one they might be in.  My solution is to remove them from my project bags altogether and keep them in a small pouch clipped to a hook inside my handbag, so I always know where they are.  I thought you might have that same trouble(!), so I thought a little pouch might be just the thing for you too.  Adorned with our happy SpaceCadet, it’s got a nifty ring to clip anywhere that you know you’ll never lose it.

Normally priced at $8.99, they're available to club members for only $6.99!
