Two beautiful options
The thing about Spring is that it comes out of nowhere. The world is all snow and slush and cold… and then we get two days of surprise warmth and everything bursts into colour. This year was exactly like that and the juxtaposition of the sudden appearance of the riot of amazing spring blooms against the last of winter’s snow was in my mind as I stood in front of the dyepots dreaming up the Yarn Alliance’s May colourway.
I started by mixing the colours I saw in the flowers popping up everywhere: deep magenta, a little fuchsia, soft pinks… and letting them soak up gently into the yarn. I love the way the colour changes as the dye is absorbed into the wool – such a wonderful process to watch. To contrast these bright shades, I created a gentle grey and drizzled it across the white of the skein – here is the cold and slush still holding on where it can. And then, I added in a splash of zingy spring yellows, allowing it mix with the pinks to form vibrant oranges, beautiful rusts, and amazing pops of gold.
By letting the dye soak in where-ever it naturally flowed, each yarn took on the colour in its own way, creating a unique collage that will knit or crochet into a watercolour palette. Swatch a few different stitch patterns to see how the colours in your individual yarn like best. And then cast on and bloom into Spring!
Inspired by the season’s flourishing blooms, I pulled out two shades from Burst and let them run across one another in the dyepot to create a colourway that flows beautifully back and forth between them. Use Flourish to create a larger project, combined with Burst or on its own – splendid either way!
