Two beautiful options
Binding (the colourway in your parcel)
Unbound (the coordinating colourway)
As dyers, our most intriguing moments happen on the edges. Dyeing a single hue is so satisfying in its simplicity but its when we introduce complexity that things get really exciting. I’m talking about when a yarn takes colour unevenly to produce mottled depth of shade, or when we mix two dyes in primary hues to carefully control the formation of a third colour, or – best of all – when we allow different colours to mix in the dyebaths, flowing and blending, and creating a boundary line where neither colour can quite hold its own… and they melt into one another in a way that is almost luminous.
This is exactly how we developed this beautiful colourway. It arose from a simple desire to explore that intriguing place where blue meets purple, where the light meets darkness, blue skies turn to twilight, where shallow waters begin to run deep. There’s a duality to these colour boundaries that is both fascinating and comforting – and possibly none is more so than with blues and purples.
So we began with a soft cornflower blue – look carefully and you’ll see it running underneath the entire skein. Such a lovely shade! And after we’d allowed it to soak into the fibers fully, we layered on a warm magenta-plum which, on its own, would have come out almost red-tinged but, layered over another blue, binding with it to create an entirely new hue. When you work with your skein, see how the colour alters along the length of it, the stitches changing with the intensity of each colour-element.
Finally, we poured over two more hues, to increase the complexity of the colour play: a bright yellow which instantly fused with the blues and purples to create a flash of green glazing, and a lovely rust to lend a darkness to the purple and soft contrast to the blue.
For the coordinating colour, Unbound, we took one of those last elements – the flash of green – and expanded it to explore more fully the way it plays against the purple. You’ll find so many intriguing hues where the two meet and blend, and in the spots where they fade and intensify. Use it for its own project or combined with the original colourway as a contrast, as stripes, or in colour blocks.

A very important note: As you all know, different dyelots rarely match perfectly, especially in hand-dyed yarns. Although we will do everything in our power to replicate the yarns from first dyelot, the yarn you receive may not match perfectly. Do bear this in mind if an exact match is important to you. To minimise any visible impact when using hand-dyed yarns, we always recommend alternating skeins every couple of rows in your project.
At SpaceCadet®, we passionately believe that knitting and crocheting make people happier deep down inside and that nothing does that more than working with gorgeous, vibrant yarn. For us, dyeing is a cosmic adventure -- a wonderful process of mixing each shade by hand from primaries and seeing where the colour takes us. The result is yarn that is as exciting for you as it is for us. Come with us and explore the farthest reaches of SpaceCadet® colour!
