Two beautiful options
If you’ve spent any time reading the SpaceCadet newsletter or blog over the last year, you’ll know there’s a creek running alongside our studio. It’s a sweet little stream, only a few inches deep in many places, flowing under the shady canopy of the many trees that hang over it from the hillside above and scattered with the kind of large, flat rocks that just invite you to sit and dip your toes in the water.
But if you’ve been reading the newsletter or blog, you’ll also know that this creek has a dark side: a kind of evil twin personality that comes out when really heavy storms arrive and the run off fills the streambed to bursting and beyond. In truth, it’s never been a problem in the nearly five years we’ve been in our studio, but this year was an exception: the creek has burst its banks several times and flooded nearby businesses, closed our road, and came within feet of our studio’s front door. We’ve been lucky so far but this year has been so bad that we leave the premises anytime there’s a storm warning on our phones, just to be safe.
And yet… and yet, I do love that creek so much! The other week, as I drove along its twists and turns with my windows down on a sunny day, I caught glimpses of the water through the trees as it ran along its shallow bed and babbling softly all along the way. The colours jumped out at me: soft green in the shallows, dark green where the water ran deeper, a bright (almost neon) green where the moss and algae grew, and a lovely, almost copper-pink where it ran over the rocks warmed in the dappled sun. As much as this creek can cause grief, when it is well-behaved, it’s too beautiful not to love.
As this is the last package of the current season, I had to go for our most luxurious yarn: Aurora, with its wonderfully cashmere-rich fiber content. Every time I cast on with it, I find myself swooning at the way it feel as it runs through my fingers. For this colourway, it was the perfect choice!
The same greens of the creek are reflected in the canopy of leaves above it, so for the coordinating colourway, we subtracted the colours of the rocks in the creek bed and let those lovely greens work their magic alone. And they really do spectacular! Combine them with your original skein or work them up into an amazing project on their own.
Fiber Content: 70% Superwash Merino, 20% Cashmere, 10% Nylon; 4-ply
Weight: Fingering; Each skein is approximately 3.5oz/100g, and the yarn contains approximately 350 yards per 100g
Extra Project Bags!
We worked before with Commonwealth Press, a group of passionate screenprinters based right here in Pittsburgh, to create an awesome custom messenger bag for our SpaceMonster club members, so I went back to them again to create something equally fun for the Yarn Alliance! I love that this fabulous project bag is big enough to carry a larger project: it will fit your WIP plus several skeins of yarn with ease. And with the SpaceCadet zipping by in his flying saucer right there front and center, it’s super stylish too!
