Two beautiful options
You know how it is when you stand in a wood and look straight up, and the trees that rise above you seem to curve a little to meet one another’s branches? That always looks like a cathedral to me, their trunks imitating stout stone pillars and the canopy above like an intricately carved ceiling. And most of all, the sunlight filtering through thousands of leaves, illuminating every possible shade of green, mimicking the enormous stained-glass windows that line the walls every great cathedral. I’ve always found that view breath-taking …and the moniker “Nature’s Cathedral” absolutely perfect.
So when we went to dye this colourway, we did something really special that you won’t be able to see until you open the skein up. First, we mixed a series of greens that capture the leaves of this great natural cathedral in all their varying hues. Then, using a resist-dyeing technique we’ve been developing, we layered the colours on in sections in a way that allowed them to mix a little here and there -- but not too much – while keeping the threshold between each section crisp and white. The effect reminded us of a stained-glass window in reverse: instead of dark lines of lead dividing the coloured glass, here we have bright lines of white cutting through the greens just like the bright sunlight breaking through the leaves. Open your skein up and you’ll see what I mean.
Even better, when you knit or crochet with it, those dividing lines are going to do something different yet again: redistributing themselves as the stitches form to create dappled spots of light amongst the mingling greens. The effect will be natural and organic. A little like the lovely feeling of standing under a tree on a beautiful Spring day.
For the coordinating colour, Komorebi (a Japanese word that refers to the effect of sunlight streaming through the leaves of the trees), we took those same greens and, instead of structuring them into sections with clear dividing lines, we sprinkled them randomly across the skeins, allowing the dye to flow through the dyebath and strike where-ever it chose. Sometimes that results in splodges, sometimes in gentle washes, but the effect is soft, light, bright, and so incredibly fresh. Use them to add depth and interest to a larger project, to work as a contrast, as stripes, or in colour blocks.
Vega is a worsted version of our incredibly popular cabled 8-ply Lyra. The result of this special plying technique is a yarn that is plump and round, with great stitch definition, extra durability and — best of all — super sproingy!
Fiber Content: 100% Superwash merino wool; cabled 8-ply
Weight: Worsted; Each skein is approximately 3.5oz/100g, and the yarn contains approximately 215 yards per 100g
