Two beautiful options
Sometimes, despite your best efforts, the road you travel is the long one. For this month’s Yarn Alliance colourway, I had originally wanted to work in greens and so my assistant and I carefully developed several recipes and dyed them one after another… and none of them felt right. In fact, each one was a struggle – too flat, too jarring, too bright, too dull. It was almost like I’d forgotten how to dye(!) and I felt so discouraged.
Then, just as we were about to give up and go home, we decided to do a complete aboutface and mixed up some lovely warm colours in the dye bowls. Not even really to come up with a Yarn Alliance colourway – more just to play with colour and refresh ourselves after a day that had felt less than successful. And suddenly, everything was fun again. We dipped and dyed and twisted and smooshed…
And then I looked at the finished skeins and realised I loved this colourway! There are bold hues in it for sure – that lovely warm yellow and the deep maroon – but the real magic is where they blend and the myriad shades they create as they come together. I see browns and oranges, rusts and golds… and maybe even streaks of soft green in places – the same colour that started the whole thing off!
The result is a colourway that is going to look spectacular on the needles or worked with a hook, all the colours blending and flowing into one another. Choose stitches that draw the yarn up vertically to create little sploches of colour, or slipped stiches to bounce the shades around, and watch the something beautiful happen! Try coordinating it with Fat-Free Chocolate or Oxblood.
For the coordinating colour, we simply dyed the same shades in the same way but took them down several notches so they came out ohhhh sooo soft, like a faded shadow of the original skein. They’ll flow and blend in the same way but also act as a beautiful contrast when held against the original colours.
